South Asian American Digital Archive

Updated 12/17/2019

Mission
SAADA creates a more inclusive society by giving voice to South Asian Americans through documenting, preserving, and sharing stories that represent their unique and diverse experiences.

Vision
We envision American and world histories that fully acknowledge the importance of immigrants and ethnic communities in the past, strengthen such communities in the present, and inspire discussion about their role in the future.
We believe that strong archives are vital to community wellbeing and that archives can be dynamic spaces for dialogue and debate. There is no dust in SAADA!

SAADA runs the Tides magazine, the Road Trips project, First Days project, Revolution Remix walking tour, community and archival events.

The Fleisher Art Memorial is guided by the spirit of its founder, who first extended an invitation in 1898 for “the world to come and learn art. Samuel Fleisher’s singular vision of high-quality, tuition-free art instruction continues uninterrupted at the Memorial. Here, children from all economic and cultural backgrounds share in the commonality of the creative experience and the cultural diversity of the city. Adult artists of all levels of experience study with a distinguished faculty of working artists in diverse fine-arts mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and ceramics.

  • Library assistant
On evenings and Saturdays, Fleisher will be opening the library, inviting in adult students and children and their families who are here attending classes. We would look to a volunteer to promote book donations, help visitors find the resources or entertainment they are looking for, and to create a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Exhibition and gallery work
There are many important ways to help out with exhibitions. Assist with the installation of shows and help monitor refreshment tables during special events.
  • Special Events
There are many events held throughout the year for which we need additional support, including Dear Fleisher: 4 x 6 Inches of Art, the annual Print Love-In, ARTspiration, and others.
  • Fundraising
Mini-fundraisers help keep our classrooms filled with the equipment they need, teachers paid the salaries they deserve, and supplies available to free classes. Help is needed on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the coffee and cookie sale in the lobby, our annual Election Day bake and book sales, the annual Student Dinner, plus other Development events throughout the year.

  • Gallery Monitor
On Saturdays, during the Children’s Program, we get many visitors to the gallery. We also see our exhibitions as a tool to enhance the art education provided in the classrooms. Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project

Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project (YASP) provides workshops for youth under 18 in the Philadelphia Prison system, as well as leadership development and support for youth when they leave the prison system. YASP also conducts workshops at schools and colleges to educate others about the flaws of the criminal justice system. By hiring formerly incarcerated youth into positions of leadership, YASP is able to empower individuals who were previously disempowered by the legal system.

YASP seeks out college students who are willing to share their knowledge and as well as learn from those they teach. College students will be asked to assume a large range of responsibilities, such as planning and facilitating workshops, academic tutoring, and assisting youth who are seeking employment. YASP provides ample opportunities for students to utilize their specific skill-set and area of expertise. Students with backgrounds in education and/or law are highly sought after, though all are encouraged to apply as an intern. Applications should be sent to Jamie Carroll at jamie@yasproject.com. Find out more about internships for College students here: http://www.yasproject.com/for-students.html

Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project is located at 2231 N. Broad Street, Suite 200, Philadelphia, PA, 19132

Village of Arts and Humanities

The mission of The Village of Arts and Humanities is to support the voices and aspirations of the community through providing opportunities for self-expression rooted in art and culture. The Village inspires people to be agents of positive change through programs that encompass arts and culture, engage youth, revitalize community, preserve heritage and respect the environment.

From the Village of Arts and Humanities website:

“As an organization and as individuals:

We value integrity, honesty, openness, personal excellence, constructive self-criticism, continual self-improvement, and unwavering mutual respect.

We regard all the North Philadelphia community as our neighbors, partners, friends, and colleagues.

We are committed to improving the physical, emotional, and social well-being of the people and the community as a whole.

We value art as a vehicle to create place, build self-esteem, and engender mutual respect. Art encompasses both the visual and performing arts as well as creativity in thinking, methodology and implementation.

We are committed to preserving the social and cultural heritage of the African American community in which we reside, while simultaneously fostering a sense of multiculturalism that reflects the needs of today’s culturally diverse community.

We embrace what society disdains and throws away, creating a new sense of possibility and hope in the community.

We believe that the strongest leadership is found within the community. Therefore, our programming supports and grows youth and adult residents into community leaders.”

Girls Rock Philly

Girls Rock Philly is an initiative to bring Philadelphia a girls-only, week-long summer day camp serving junior rockers ages 9-17. Led by a team of all female instructors & band coaches, girls in the program learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, make their own band merchandise, discover other women in rock & finesse their on-stage jump kicks.

Want to get involved? They need the year-round help of reliable, dedicated people to make camp happen. Some positions require musical experience, but there are many positions that do not. All positions are available to female & female-identifying volunteers, with opportunities available for men as well!
